speakeasy. is a hold-to-talk dictation app for Mac. This notice explains the hosted product and the separate open-source, bring-your-own-key edition.
Open-source edition
- Audio is captured locally while you hold the key.
- Transcription and optional cleanup go directly to Groq with the API key you provide. Audio does not pass through the speakeasy. hosted API.
- Your API key is stored on your device using operating-system encryption. Preferences such as your hotkey and theme are stored locally and are not encrypted.
- There is no speakeasy. account, hosted usage meter, or synced transcript history. Groq processing uses the data controls on your own provider account; see Groq’s data policy.
Hosted edition
- Audio is captured locally while you hold the key, then sent through the speakeasy. API to Groq for transcription and optional cleanup.
- The hosted Groq inference route is configured for zero data retention of audio and text. Groq still collects usage metadata; see Groq’s data policy. speakeasy. does not keep audio, transcripts, or generated text as a history.
- Supabase provides authentication and account storage. Sign-in emails may be delivered through Brevo. Stripe processes payments; speakeasy. does not store complete card details.
Hosted processing consent
Hosted processing requires your acceptance of the current processing consent. You can withdraw it in Settings. Once the service records withdrawal, it rejects new processing for your account on every device and releases unfinished usage reservations. On the device where you withdraw, the app also discards an unfinished capture and suppresses results awaiting delivery. Withdrawal cannot recall content already sent to a provider or text already delivered to another app or device. You must explicitly accept the current consent again before processing resumes. Withdrawal does not sign you out, cancel billing, or delete your account.
Account and operational data
We keep the data needed to operate the account: email and authentication records, enrolled device identifiers, setup and consent events, plan and subscription state, metered usage, operation status, support requests, app/platform versions, permission state, and privacy-safe error codes. Automatic usage and diagnostic records exclude audio, transcript text, generated text, clipboard contents, and window titles. Support messages and content you choose to attach are stored as described below.
Support and AI-output reports
Automatically included support diagnostics use an allowlist of technical fields. They do not include dictated or generated text. We store the message you write and any dictated content you separately choose to attach after accepting the warning in the app. Avoid including sensitive information you do not want support to receive. A support receipt contains a ticket ID, server timestamp, and status; it is not a response-time promise.
Retention and deletion
Account deletion blocks account access, cancels future subscription billing, and removes account, authentication, device, consent, usage, and in-app support data. Deletion is permanent once completed. If cleanup fails, the app shows a pending state and lets you retry. Payment-provider records can remain when a dispute or other provider hold applies. Deletion does not erase text already pasted into other apps, clipboard history, or operating-system permissions. Local preferences such as theme and hotkey choice may remain.
A narrow payment and tax ledger is retained for ten years after the end of the calendar year in which the transaction occurred. It contains provider customer and transaction references, a pseudonymous account reference, timestamps, currency, amounts, tax amounts and jurisdiction, product/plan, invoice or receipt references, refund timestamps, and dispute status. It excludes email, name, authentication data, device IDs, consent events, support bodies, audio, transcripts, and generated text. A separate deletion record retains a pseudonymous account reference and cleanup status; the account ID and recovery secret are removed when deletion completes.
Permissions
- Microphone — captures dictation while you hold the key.
- Input/accessibility — detects the global hold-to-talk key where the operating system requires it.
- Automation — pastes final text on macOS where System Events permission is required.
